چکیده

16 17 It is widely assumed that the boundary layer above the core is the source of intraplate volcanoes 18 such as Hawaii, Samoa and Yellowstone and that the sub-plate boundary layer at the top of the 19 mantle is thin and entirely subsolidus. In fact, this layer is thicker and has higher expansivity, 20 buoyancy and insulating power than the lower one, and may have higher potential temperatures. The 21 observed seismic structure of the low-velocity zone (LVZ) including attenuation, anisotropy, sharp 22 boundaries and a reduction of both compressional and shear moduli can be taken as strong evidence 23 for the ubiquitous presence of melt in the upper mantle. If the LVZ contains as little as 1-2% melt 24 then it is the most plausible and accessible source for mid-plate magmas; deeply rooted active 25 upwellings are unnecessary. The upper boundary layer is also the most plausible source of ancient 26 isotopic signatures of these magmas and their inclusions. 27 28

Time-Arrival Location of Seismic P-Wave based on Wavelet Transform Modulus Maxima

The time-arrival location of seismic P-wave is an important problem in the seismic research field. The modulus maxima of wavelet transform is a useful method for picking up the singularities of function. For applying the modulus maxima method to investigate the arrival time, it is necessary to eliminate the influence of random factors. Based on standard deviation, we present a method to reduce ...

Spectral-Element Simulations of Seismic Waves Generated by the 2009 L’Aquila Earthquake

We adopt a spectral-element method (SEM) to perform numerical simulations of the complex wavefield generated by the 6 April 2009 Mw 6.3 L’Aquila earthquake in central Italy. The mainshock is represented by a finite-fault solution obtained by inverting strong-motion and Global Positioning System data, testing both 1D and 3D wavespeed models for central Italy. Surface topography, attenuation, and...

eismic modeling and analysis of a prototype heated nuclear

We have developed seismic velocity models for the heated rock surrounding a tunnel in Yucca Mountain tuff and compared the results with field data obtained at the Yucca Mountain drift scale test DST facility from 1998 to 2002. During that time, the tunnel was heated to replicate the effects of long-term storage of decaying nuclear waste and to study the effects of extreme temperatures on the su...

Simultaneous inversion of active and passive source datasets for 3-D seismic structure with application to Tasmania

[1] Refraction, wide-angle reflection and teleseismic arrival time data are combined in a simultaneous inversion for 3-D lithospheric P-wavespeed and Moho geometry beneath Tasmania, southeast Australia. A new iterative nonlinear tomography scheme, which incorporates a novel gridbased method of traveltime prediction, is used to obtain the solution model. Synthetic resolution tests demonstrate th...

First Break Detection in Seismic Reflection Data with Fuzzy ARTMAP Neural Networks

In this paper we investigate the use of a supervised, but self-organizing, Adaptive Resonance Theory type of neural network (Fuzzy-ARTMAP), for first break picking in seismic reflection data. First break picking is the accurate location of the leading energy pulse received by a geophone in response to a seismic shot. The performance of Fuzzy-ARTMAP is compared to our previous work with multi-la...
